Lipstick and Dynamite
Lipstick and Dynamite: The First Ladies of Wrestling shines a spotlight on six trailblazing women—The Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, Gladys “Kill ‘E” Gillem, Ida Mae Martinez, Ella Waldek, and Penny Banner—who broke barriers in the male-dominated world of professional wrestling. Tracing the rise of women’s wrestling from its rough beginnings in the 1930s through its golden era in the 1940s to the 1960s, the film explores how these pioneers entered the ring when the sport was often dismissed and even banned for women.
Through candid interviews, they recount their struggles and triumphs, revealing stories of resilience amid financial exploitation, rowdy crowds, and physical abuse. Interwoven with vintage match footage, television segments, and clips from the 1951 film Racket Girls, the documentary also delves into their unexpected post-wrestling careers—including detective work, nursing, and lion-taming. The film concludes at the Gulf Coast Wrestlers Reunion, where these icons gather to reminisce and celebrate their lasting legacy.
